How lookups work: If an FMCSA QC API key is configured (Tab 5), lookups return FMCSA data as JSON when the service answers (requests can be slow or blocked). Without a key, you will be redirected to the SAFER public search page at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov.

Why this matters: Fraudulent COIs are a known problem in trucking. Always cross-check the insurer name in the NAIC database. Legitimate admitted carriers appear at content.naic.org/cis/searchCompany. If the insurer cannot be found, do not accept the certificate.
About MOTUS: MOTUS is FMCSA's official Licensing & Insurance system at motus.dot.gov (part of the U.S. Department of Transportation). It replaced the old L&I Public search. Use it to verify operating authority, broker bonds, and insurance filings for any carrier or broker.

Verify a Carrier's Authority
Confirm that a broker or shipper's carrier is authorized to operate before dispatching a load.
Broker Bond Verification
Confirm a freight broker has filed the required $75,000 BMC-84 surety bond or trust fund.
Insurance Filings (BMC-91/91X)
Verify liability insurance filings. BMC-91 and BMC-91X are certificates of liability insurance that the insurer files with FMCSA. A cancellation is filed on Form BMC-35 (BMC-36 for a bond), not on BMC-91X.
Cargo Insurance (BMC-34)
Check cargo insurance filings. Required for household goods movers and certain for-hire carriers.
Out-of-Service Orders
Search active Out-of-Service orders via SAFER. Check before dispatching any driver or vehicle.

MCS-150 Biennial Update Reminder
Motor carrier census form — required every 2 years per 49 CFR 390.19T
Enter your last update date to see your next filing deadline.
After you update the MCS-150 on FMCSA’s site, record the update with the power units, drivers, address and contact it showed. Carrier Nexus then reminds you when the fleet table, the driver list or Company Facts no longer match, and shows a 60-day and a 30-day reminder before the biennial update is due. Carrier Nexus never files it for you.

The FMCSA Query Center (QC) API returns carrier data from FMCSA in JSON format when the service answers. It's free to register. Once configured, Carrier Nexus can look up any carrier's safety record, authority status, and insurance directly — no browser redirects needed.
How to Get Your API Key
- Go to the FMCSA registration page: ask.fmcsa.dot.gov — Register for QC API — opens in new tab
- Complete the short registration form with your company name, USDOT#, and email address
- FMCSA will email your webKey — usually within 1 business day
- Paste it in the field below and click Save Configuration

Security note: The web key is a credential, so it is not saved in the company database. It stays in this browser only, filed under your company, and is sent only to FMCSA (mobile.fmcsa.dot.gov) when you run a lookup. Each person who wants live lookups saves the key on their own device. It is masked on screen — only the last 4 characters are shown.
What is shared and what is not: the company name and numbers, the MCS-150 date, your MOTUS link and every insurer check are saved for the whole company. The web key is not. Lookups work only while this device can reach FMCSA, and FMCSA’s service may refuse a lookup from a browser — the page then opens SAFER instead.
